I changed my supplier from Southern Electric who I had used for years to Scottish Power last year. I opted for their online account. I have not been able to access my bills, ever!! Yesterday I received a bill stating that I owe them £428.62! Only one actual reading has been taken in a year, all the rest are estimates. According to their records my account was £307.25 in credit on the 11/09/06 and as far as they are concerned I have used £703.33 worth of electricity during the summer months from the 16th of June to date. Only two of us live in the house. They now want to increase my Direct Debit payments from £43.00 per month to a wapping £124.50 per month!!!! I telephoned them yesterday to find out why I was not informed earlier that my account was not being covered by my Direct Debits and they told me that my email address had not been activated. I have never received anything telling me that this was the case and yet they have all my contact details. On their customer website my email address comes up automatically along with my password if I begin to type it in to login, so I fail to understand how they can say that the email address has not been activated. I am a single mother on Disability Living Allowance and certainly don’t have over £400 lying around! Their customer services team are less than helpful and I certainly would not recommend them to anyone. Yesterday I opted to return to Southern Electric with whom I have had no problems in the past and they are saying that £50.00 per month by Direct Debit should cover my usage! How on earth Scottish Power allowed my account to get into this state is quite frankly astonishing. My usage has not increased that I am aware of and I am still trying to get to the bottom of how I could possibly have used so much electricity during the summer. I know that electricity prices have gone up but this whole situation is shocking!!!
